The Warm Springs/Pine Mountain area offers some stunning views and some great places to see. This trip we visited the Little White House grounds and museum. It was where FDR spent some of his happiest moments and where he took his final breath. I knew about FDR from history class decades ago, but this stop really brought him to life. He became an integral part of this little community of Warm Springs, Georgia. He was well known and well loved. He was born of privilege but spent is presidency in service of all the Americans who were reeling from the Great Depression and led our country and its Allies to victory in WWII. It is sad that he died just days short of the war’s end. He was so talented in so many areas, he even designed the hand controls so he could drive his own car. I definitely came away with a new respect for the man. “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today. Let us move forward with strong and active faith.” He lived by those words, not letting his physical infirmities stop him from achieving the goals and dreams he had to rebuild America.

Our next stop was the National Hatchery. It was early in the season to see a lot but we still got to see quite a few fish and some beautiful pools.

Our last stop was Dowdell Knob. Its the highest point in the Pine Mountain Range and a place where FDR used to go to picnic. There is a grill that he used that was encased in stone in his memory. What a view! The mountains in the fall are stunning but they are just as beautiful in the spring with all the shades of green.

Our next visit will include Calloway Gardens and/or the Wildlife Safari. Can’t wait! When you travel, take a side road, do some exploring, make some memories!
